Anyone help.I floated 2 eggs from under one of my stock pairs yesterday leaving them no eggs. I went up this evening and they have laid another egg. I have left this egg under them. Is it to short a time for this egg to be fertile should i throw it or just leave it and see what happens. I am keen to try and get all young birds around the same age this year as last year they were all ages. Any advice would be appreciated.

Had a hen last year that laid three eggs twice and all were fertile so I would leave it and then see if it is fertile in about 7 days.

How long did you let the pair sit their eggs before floating them?

The usual advice is to let them sit 7/10 days before floating. It gives the hen a chance to return to normal before she goes down again, and lets you check that the eggs are full before you float them.

Barring another hen laying in the nest, something has gone wrong with the hen's cycle, and I'd be inclined to let her hatch and rear this one (if it's full). That puts her through the full cycle, and hopefully she'll lay normally when that youngster is around 10/12 days old (they go down a bit quicker on single reared youngsters).

Quite likely the hen has laid three, if you end up with a fourth I'd suspect a pair of hens Posted Image
